Sylt Residency

In May 2022 I participated in my second artist residency at Sylt Quella in Sylt Island Germany. Here I developed a new step on my approach to animations, instead of animating onto paper, I used the Nazi landscape of the island, redesigned in anticipation of the invasion of Britain, to animate over sights of violence. Using chalk I drew on and around the hooks that Nazi Sea planes used to land. I also animated directly onto the brickwork of a former SS Barracks.
These animations were my first to engage with the physical landscape, it was the first time I engaged directly with the German Language, my grandparents mother tongue, lost to me down the generations, and finally the first time I inserted myself into my artwork.
